Basic Geology of Natural Stone
The oldest rocks on earth are thought to be over 4.4 billion years old, each formed via different geological processes. At many locations the rock "outcrops" sufficiently close to the surface at which point is it then quarried or mined.
Granite and Basalt are classified as Igneous
Limestone, Sandstone and Shale are classified as Sedimentary
Slate, Marble and Quartzite are classified as Metamorphic
Three major groups of rocks:
Formed by molten magma
Formed from materials that have settled at the bottom of water
Originally either Igneous or Sedimentary rocks that have been exposed to concentrated heat and or pressure which causes a transition into another form of rock
